The head of the Iraqi caretaker government, Adel Abdul-Mahdi, discussed with Italian Defense Minister Lorenzo Gorini the continuation of bilateral cooperation in the field of training Iraqi forces. This came in a meeting between the two sides held today in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, which the Italian minister arrived on a surprise visit, the undeclared duration.

According to a statement issued by the Iraqi government, Abdul Mahdi pointed out the importance of continuing bilateral cooperation and supporting the Iraqi military and security capabilities in the field of training, as about 800 Italian soldiers are deployed in Iraq as part of the efforts of the international coalition to fight ISIS, while the Italian forces do not participate in combat missions in Iraq, but rather Its work is limited to training and counseling

This position comes despite the fact that the Abdul Mahdi government is working to remove foreign forces from Iraq following the recent military confrontation between the United States and Iran. In this context, Abdel-Mahdi said, during his meeting with the Italian minister, that his government seeks to build balanced relations in the Arab, regional and international contexts, and its constant endeavor to defuse crises and achieve calm. He pointed out the importance of countries respecting the sovereignty, security and stability of Iraq, stressing that the Iraqi government is continuing to establish friendship and cooperation relations with all neighboring and friendly countries on the basis of mutual respect.

For his part, the Italian Minister of Defense expressed the support of the government of his country for the security, stability and national sovereignty of Iraq, and the intention of the Italian government to stand with this country, especially in these sensitive circumstances, pointing to Rome's keenness to expand cooperation with Iraq and meet the needs of the military and security forces in the areas of armament and training According to the statement. Gorini affirmed the necessity to overcome the current situation in the region and spare its people and interests the dangers of war, and the importance of cooperation and consultation between the two countries in this field that matters to the security and stability of the region and the world
