Davos.. Aspirations to attract investors to Iraq

    Thursday 23 January 2020

Iraq looks forward to encouraging investment and urging international companies to work in various sectors, and the Iraqi delegation headed by President Barham Saleh, at the Davos Economic Forum, hopes to reflect a clear and true picture of the country's internal situation in order to attract investors.
The forum participants discussed several topics, including how to address the crisis that is ravaging the global economy without having negative impacts on the environment.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Davos Forum, President Barham Saleh said: "We need to strengthen our emerging private sector, and I look forward to those gathered here today to do their part by bringing foreign investment and skills to Iraq."
"We understand that we have a crucial role to play in making this a reality. "We need to become a country where Iraqis and foreigners have the confidence to invest in the long term, and where the private sector feels empowered and as such, we need to create legal and regulatory foundations to protect investors and liberalize markets."
For his part, a deputy for the Current of Wisdom Ali Al-Abboudi, "the Davos Forum is one of the important forums where influential leaders in the economic world, especially the oil countries, attend," noting that "Iraq's need to be present in the forum would bring it to large investments."
"The President of the Republic sent messages of reassurance and one of the important reasons was to put the world in the picture of the internal situation in Iraq and the possibility of attracting international companies," al-Abboudi said.
"We need high international coordination in light of what the region is experiencing, especially since the conference is attended by a lot of heads of state and world leaders," said Al-Nasr Alliance mp Faleh al-Ziadi, adding that "Iraq's participation in this conference, represented by the President of the Republic, will reflect positively towards openness and investment."
"There will be clear repercussions for the country on the economic and political levels, as well as opening up great prospects in line with the country's economic plan," he said.
Amer al-Jawahiri, a consultant for industrial and investment development, said that "the Iraqi delegation participating in Davos should make promises to the countries of the world to form an interim government within days, which will pave the way for early elections and a new government, thus being able to change the situation that the country is going through." He stressed the need to use the conference to cooperate with everyone towards profit and benefit, as well as to develop economic relations, which promote peace in the region and the world and thus reflect on the achievement of the economy and development."
The World Economic Forum kicked off tuesday in Davos, Switzerland, with 3,000 leaders and executives from some 117 countries, including Iraq.
The forum will continue until Next Friday, and this year Davos celebrates its 50th anniversary, and one of the main topics participants will discuss is how to address the crisis that is ravaging the global economy without adversely affecting the environment.
