{Baghdad: Al Furat News} The campaigns launched by the demonstrators from the middle of the popular protests and across social media to support the national product have achieved remarkable success in terms of converting the consumer compass into what is produced inside the country.
The popular campaigns aimed at encouraging owners of factories that have been disrupted and have left armies of the unemployed during the past years, to restart them again.
A few weeks after the launch of these campaigns, some Iraqi factories, particularly those producing dairy, food and plastic goods, were able to supply merchants with local products at the expense of imported goods that were dominating the local markets before the October protests.
Sources in the Ministry of Commerce said, in a statement to an Arab newspaper, that "the latest figures issued by the Iraqi customs showed a noticeable decrease in the import of goods in the past two months compared to previous months."
The sources, who preferred not to be identified, attributed the reason to the "boycott calls for the Iranian goods that the protesters called for, which later expanded into a campaign to support the national product."
The sources add that the rate of decline in imports is not audited so far, but through the movement of border trade crossings into Iraq with neighboring countries in the last December and January, the size of the decline is estimated at between 6 and 8 percent, compared to the same two months in 2019 and 2018, considering that this The decline in imports is not only related to the return of the activity of some local sectors. Rather, the security tension that has surrounded the country has had a role in it.
The sources said that since the launch of the popular campaigns, Iraq has witnessed the return of more than 20 Iraqi products (from the private sector), and other government sectors have increased their production of spinning, weaving, sponge, cement, solid iron, leather, food cans, and others.
For his part, the owner of the Narges Plastic Factory, Firas Al-Lami, said in a press statement, "The plastic materials industry in Iraq is witnessing unprecedented progress," explaining that the production of some Iraqi factories, despite its simple capabilities, is now covering a good area of the market’s need, compared to For the first half of last year, for example.
Al-Lami pointed out that the Iraqi factories did not raise the level of the quality of their goods and production capacity, except after increasing Iraqis' appetite for buying the local product.

According to official reports, the total volume of imports of Iraq amounted to 31.6 billion dollars in 2017, and China, Turkey and Iran are the most important countries from which Baghdad is imported, and this comes against the absence of government support for the local product since 2003 until now.
In a related context, Hossam Al-Gharawi, Director of Information for the General Company for Rubber Industries affiliated to the Iraqi Ministry of Industry, said that the tire factory in Babylon (Babylon tires), after stopping for several years as a result of the current conditions that Iraq is going through and the invasion of imported tires that have occupied the local markets, has returned To work again to produce and market tires, after undergoing all laboratory tests.
Al-Gharawi stressed the superiority of Babel tires over the Chinese, Indian and Iranian and increase their competitiveness with the Turkish and Korean products. He added that the demand for Babylon tires in the previous period was weak, which led to the full stores and the factory stopping production, but it improved a lot after the national product support campaigns launched by activists through social networking sites and demonstration arenas.
For their part, citizens expressed their hope to restart them in the factories prepared for the opening, as they see them as a possibility to employ significant numbers of Iraqi workforce.
The citizen Waad Al-Hassani said, "The increase in the demand to buy the local product contributed to employing Iraqi workforce twice what it was before the protests of last October 25," noting that most factories attracted new workers and multiplied their working times from 12 to 20 hours per day to meet the market need. .

He added that the success of the campaigns to support the national product encouraged hundreds of owners of small factories to rehabilitate their factories with self-efforts without any governmental support.
In turn, the owner of a foodstuff store, Salem Al Sheikhly, said, "The most frequently asked question among citizens in the Iraqi market is: Is the product Iraqi or Iranian?", Pointing out that "Iranian goods are jammed in warehouses despite the cheapness of their price and some of them have become expired, especially Dairy and meat. "
He added, "The Iraqis have preferred the local product, even if it is of poor quality to the foreigner." is over
