ARBIL (Kurdistan 24) - On Saturday, the Iraqi Ministry of Defense directed all members of the army and its affiliates to work to restore "law enforcement" in the country.
This came after the supreme religious authority, Ali Sistani, reprimanded the security forces for their failure to perform their duties in preventing violence between demonstrators and their opponents, especially in the city of Najaf, which resulted in deaths.
The Ministry of Defense said in a statement, "The Ministry of Defense calls upon all its officers, including officers and ranks, to take their real and firm role towards those who want to tamper with the security and stability of the country and have a responsibility to impose law and order on everyone."
The statement added that the Iraqi army has shown restraint since the protests that entered its 130th day to demand the departure of the ruling elite have erupted.
Prior to that, the Iraqi Ministry of Interior said in a statement that what happened in Najaf and Karbala were "unfortunate events" and that "the security forces are carrying out their duties to protect peaceful demonstrators and prevent attacks against them from any party, as well as to maintain the peaceful demonstrations."
She added that the demonstrators should "exercise restraint and adhere to the demonstration areas."
Last week, about eight unarmed protesters were killed and dozens wounded in clashes with supporters of Sadr movement leader Muqtada al-Sadr, known as "blue hats" in Najaf.
