American Special Operations Forces were accompanying members of the Iraqi counterterrorism service on a difficult mission in a mountainous area full of caves to eliminate an ISIS camp in northern Iraq when two American soldiers were killed in a brutal war with the organization’s members.
The killing of the two soldiers from the American Special Operations Forces is the first of its kind this year, and they are also the first deaths of the American army since the killing of former ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in a US raid in Syria at the end of last October.
No Iraqi anti-terrorist forces were killed or injured in the operation, according to officials, but two were killed earlier this year in another raid.
The deaths of the soldiers raised questions about the operation, which prompted the American army to start reviewing the combat missions carried out by its elements with the local Iraqi forces, according to a report by the American newspaper "The New York Times".
Details of the operation
The military operation was targeting hideouts and caves in which members of the organization are hiding and training in the Qara Jug Mountains, south of Makhmour district, 40 miles southwest of Erbil.
The land around Makhmour is rocky and dry hills, as well as natural caves that the organization uses as hideouts and to store weapons.
After defining the area and the activity of ISIS in it, through American and Iraqi intelligence sources, the beginning of the operation was an airdrop in the area, to purify it, so the organization's elements clashed fiercely to defend their stronghold, which they use away from the eyes of the Iraqi authorities, as it is a disputed area between the Iraqi government And among the Kurds.

American forces were forced to deploy additional forces to recover the bodies of the two soldiers "in an effort that took about six hours," according to a statement by a spokesman for the US-led international coalition in Iraq, General Miles Caggins.
Brett McGurk, the US envoy to the international coalition against ISIS, said: "Two American soldiers were killed in Iraq while fighting with ISIS, reports indicate that reaching them took six hours. Time is incorrect."
"It appears that we have lost focus during this task, while the risks to our people are increasing, and their resources have been depleted without good reason."
According to a military official, the Americans who were killed by a crane after falling into a hole in a cave should have been withdrawn.
The identity of the dead soldiers was not disclosed, a measure US forces follow until the families of the dead are reported.
In a separate statement, the Iraqi Joint Operations Command announced the implementation of the anti-terrorist agency, a military operation against "ISIS remnants" in the Khanouka area of the Hamrin hills.
