{International: Al Furat News} A Republican member of the US Senate presented, on Thursday, a bill to withdraw American forces from Saudi Arabia, thereby increasing pressure on the kingdom to reduce its oil production in order to change the direction of the decline in oil prices that affected American energy companies.
The proposed bill, submitted by Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, the oil-producing state, will withdraw US forces 30 days after approval, almost a month faster than a similar bill presented by two other Republican members in March.
Cassidy presented the bill while the OPEC + group, a group of oil producers that includes Saudi Arabia and other member states of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and allies including Russia, is close to concluding a deal to reduce oil production in a record amount representing about 15 million barrels, or 15 percent of Global production.
The recent outbreak of the Corona virus led to a sharp decline in oil demand at a time when Saudi Arabia and Russia are pumping them as if they are in a race to obtain market share, which pushed prices to their lowest level in 18 years.
Cassidy said that additional Saudi oil made it impossible for US energy companies, the world's largest oil and gas producer, to compete in the market, and Saudi Arabia is the world's largest oil exporter.
"Withdrawing the forces present to protect others is an acknowledgment that friendship and support are a two-way street," he added.
Cassidy's bill faces a tough battle, and he will have to get approval from the Senate and House of Representatives, and then pass President Donald Trump into law.
Nonetheless, it shows how Congress can take action against Saudi Arabia if it does not comply with the plan to cut oil production.
US President Donald Trump announced Thursday evening that Moscow and Riyadh were "close" to reaching an agreement to cut production to raise oil prices, adding that he had made a "very good" triple phone conversation with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, and Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz.
Russia had rejected a request by Saudi Arabia to cut production, angering Riyadh, which then decided to raise its production ceiling to record limits in March.
