The US State Department issued a comment on the escalating assassinations in Iraq, in conjunction with the round of talks being conducted by Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi in Washington.
The US State Department said, "It is angry about the assassination of civil rights activists in Iraq and the attack on protesters in Baghdad and Basra."
And urged the United States on behalf of the State, Morgan Ortagus in a statement, "the government of Iraq to take immediate steps to hold accountable the factions, criminals and gangs that attack Iraqis who exercise their right to peaceful protest."
On Thursday, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) strongly condemned the killing of two activists in Basra and the targeting of two others during the past week, and urged the government to intensify efforts to hold the perpetrators accountable and prevent repeated attacks and intimidation against activists .
"The killing of Dr. Reham Yaqoub last night and the improvement of Osama a week ago poses a serious threat to the security and stability of Basra," said the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, according to a statement issued by the mission on August 20.

"The Basrians should not live in such an atmosphere of terror and intimidation. There is an urgent need for greater action by the authorities. The full force of the law must be applied to reach the perpetrators, arrest them and hold them accountable, and put an end to this cycle of violence," she added.
The mission’s statement indicated that “the killing of Osama on August 14 led to an escalation of protests in Basra demanding accountability for the perpetrators.”
He explained, "The UNAMI Human Rights Office received reliable reports of two targeted killing attempts in Basra on August 17, when unidentified armed elements shot a car carrying three activists, including a woman, which led to the transfer of two of them to the hospital for treatment." Unidentified gunmen also shot at a car that was being driven by another woman, but did not hit their target. "
The mission statement stressed, "UNAMI acknowledges the positive steps taken by the government in response to these developments, and urges further measures to achieve justice, accountability and security."
