{Baghdad: Al Furat News} The Ministry of Water Resources explained the importance of the Shatt al-Basra regulator, which was inaugurated on Sunday.
Minister Mahdi Rashid Al-Hamdani said in a press conference held after the inauguration of the project that "the project would reduce the salt concentrations that previously reached more than 40,000 parts per million to 4,000 parts per million, a level considered good and encourages investment in livestock and other uses."
He added, "The opening of this project at this time carries two messages. The first is that it coincides with the visit of the Pope of the Vatican to Iraq and the importance this visit represents at the global level, and the second is that this project has improved the quality of water in the general downstream by a large percentage."
For his part, Governor Asaad Al-Eidani said that the project had been sabotaged since the 1990s.
He added that this project will solve the problem of stretching the salty tongue that the governorate always suffers from, as well as starting the pipelines conveying the sewage project, which will help end the problem of dumping sewage in the rivers and go to the Hamdan drainage station.
For his part, the executive director of the project, Ibrahim Ghazi, said that the technical staff in the ministry had completed the rehabilitation of the regulator, as the work included the construction of five gates operating with a hydraulic system in addition to two gates for the navigational corridor and the movable bridge.
Ghazi stated in a press statement, "All these gates operate with a hydraulic and electronic system, in addition to civil works at the bottom of the regulator, painting the concrete wall, constructing roads, rehabilitating both sides of the Shatt al-Basra, constructing gardens and cladding roads."
He added that the cost of establishing the project was about 18 billion, including importing pumps from European origins and contracting from the Greek International Petroleum Company to import equipment for the project.
Meanwhile, the Director of the Public Downfall Department in Basra, Haider Shanan Salal, said that the last facility in the public downstream sector is its main function to pass the drainage water towards Khor Al-Zubayr and then to the Gulf and prevent the return of salty sea water during the tidal process to the upper part of the southern part of Basra.
Shannan pointed out that the other benefits of this regulator is to raise the levels of the regulator in order to benefit from it for the development of fisheries and industrial purposes.
It is noteworthy that the project was referred since 2013 and work on it stopped in 2015 due to the economic crisis, and then work resumed at the end of 2018.
