Iraq wants to diversify its imports of natural gas to run its stalled power stations, due to the insufficiency of locally produced gas and the lack of dependence on Iranian gas, which Iran is exerting political pressure on the Iraqi government, by reducing gas supplies, especially in the government of Haider al-Abadi .
"We are keen to buy gas from Qatar or Russia and Kazakhstan to run the power stations," said Deputy Prime Minister for Energy, Ihssan Abdul-Jabbar, noting that Iraq has built its electrical stations since 2010 on gas fuel .
He added that gas-fired electrical plants with a production capacity of 20 gigawatts need 7 billion standard cubic feet per day in order to operate, and it is impossible for Iraq to produce this, indicating that according to the oil market data and our investments, oil production will reach 7-8 million barrels, This amount does not produce more than 5 billion standard cubic feet of gas associated with oil production in the best case .
He pointed out that Iraq will continue to import gas to run the power stations for a period of 20 years, and its import will decrease until the disappearance of the electrical stations that operate on gas because we do not think about building stations that operate on gas, explaining that one billion standard cubic feet per day will enter the gas system during the year 2024 thanks to the construction of gas plants Basra, Dhi Qar and Maysan .
And Iraq established in 2010, Basra Gas Company, in which the government owns 51%, Shell 44% and Japanese Mitsubishi 5%, to invest associated gas in the fields of Rumaila, Zubair and West Qurna 1, and the company began working in the year 2013, and was unable to invest all the gas associated with oil production .
Iraq relies on importing Iranian gas to operate power stations in Baghdad and some southern provinces, and imports 1.8 billion standard cubic feet daily, and Iran recently reduced the quantities to less than 200 million standard cubic feet, due to Iraq not paying its $ 5 billion debt .
On the other hand, the director of the Iraqi Oil Marketing Company "SOMO", Alaa Al-Mousawi, told "Al-Iqtisad News", that "Iraq imports gas from Iran through a network of pipelines linking to the electrical stations through the national transmission network, which is considered to be of remarkably low cost compared to By maritime transport, and it ensures the secure and smooth flow of gas to the electrical stations . "
He added, "The Ministry of Oil began to search for other sources to import gas through the sea port in the ports of Basra in order to diversify the sources and maintain the flow of quantities according to Iraq's natural gas needs to ensure the stability of providing the needs of the power stations in the event that supplies from any source stop for any reason, whether they are from Qatar. Or Russia or any other source . "
In an interview with Economy News, the official spokesman for the Ministry of Electricity, Ahmed Moussa, said that the Federal Energy Council, which includes the Ministries of Electricity and Oil, is keen to protect energy security, by diversifying Iraq's imports of gas and electricity from neighboring countries, indicating that the Ministry of Oil provides Gas and its import will power the production capacity of 34,000 megawatts of power plants .
He noted that there are some gas stations out of service, due to the lack of gas, explaining that importing gas from Qatar or Russia and any other country will positively affect the citizen by providing electricity, especially since the demand does not exceed 29 thousand megawatts .
Moussa indicated that Iraq's import of gas from Iran is currently 50 million standard cubic meters per day, and these quantities have decreased to less than 5 million standard cubic meters in the last period, which means the loss of the electricity system more than 6 thousand megawatts, adding that the Ministry of Electricity is currently working on Connecting Iraq with the electricity system of the Gulf countries, Turkey, Jordan and Egypt in order to import what it needs from electricity .
He noted that operating power stations with crude oil is very expensive, as one megawatt needs 40 barrels of oil per day, and therefore Iraq needs more than 700,000 barrels per day to operate the power stations, which is an economically unsuccessful option .
Iraq needs to spend more than 20 billion dollars to develop its gas fields and gas associated with production, and Iraq has reserves of 125 billion standard cubic meters, 75% of which is associated with oil production, and Iraq has allocated more than one billion dollars in the budget for the year 2021, to invest the gas that is burned in the fields. Oil .
The head of the Parliamentary Finance Committee, Haitham al-Jubouri, said that "Iraq imports gas at a value of 6 trillion dinars" 4.1 billion dollars "annually to operate power stations. The current problem is that the great expansion in electricity production is not accompanied by an expansion in gas investment, adding that 72% of Gas associated with oil production is burning in the sky .
Al-Jubouri called on the Ministry of Oil to invite international companies to invest gas fields in Anbar and Diyala, and we are ready to allocate funds in the current and next year’s budget for gas investment .
Meanwhile, the oil expert, Hamza Al-Jawahiri, told Al-Iqtisad News that Iraq does not have the appropriate facilities to import liquefied gas from Russia, Kazakhstan and Qatar, and therefore there is a tendency from the Ministry of Oil to lease a specialized vessel that converts the gas from liquefied to dry and pumps it into the gas system for operation Power stations, pointing out that the current option is to import gas from Qatar, as it is close to Iraq, and the cost of shipping will be lower .
He noted that the burning of gas will continue for several years, and needs greater investments, but Iraq has a tendency in this aspect, as for the investment of gas fields, specifically in Mansouriya and crutch, it contains difficulties, explaining that the difficulties that exist in investing the crutch field is its occurrence in Wadi Houran, which is considered the headquarters To organize ISIS .
According to specialists, Iraq needs to build stations worth more than 4 billion dollars to convert liquefied gas into natural gas and use it in power stations, and since Iraq suffers from a financial crisis, the matter of importing gas from countries such as Russia and Kazakhstan is very difficult now, and therefore Iraq will adopt Iran now has to lease a private ship, which is also expensive .
