The palm groves in Basra governorate suffer from dredging, drought and the extension of the salty tongue, which cast a shadow over the production rate and the destruction of large areas of agricultural lands specialized in producing the finest dates in the world.
"The governorate has prepared a plan to develop date palm cultivation and increase its crops and other projects to rotate date palm cultivation in all districts and sub-districts," the deputy governor of Basra for districts and sub-districts, Arab Al-Jazaery, said, according to the official agency, noting that "these projects are waiting for financial allocations to see the light."
He added, "The sweeping operations have transformed large areas of the orchards into residential lands, which are witnessing a large turnout of citizens due to the housing crisis, which has damaged the environment of the province and its agricultural production."
For his part, the representative of the Basra governor of the local government in Al-Faw district, Walid Al-Sharifi, affirmed that "the salty tide and the lack of water allocated for irrigation negatively and directly affect the increase in production," indicating that "farmers and farmers are afraid because of the salty tide that could destroy the cultivated lands."
Al-Sharifi added, "The governorate is currently awaiting the decision of the Ministry of Water Resources to designate the site and location for the construction of the cut-off dam, which is supposed to be built on the Shatt al-Arab in the north of Al-Faw to prevent the salt tide from reaching agricultural lands and orchards of date palm cultivation," explaining that "the farmer cannot cultivate large lands With the palm trees for fear of the salty tide reaching them, and thus they will be destroyed, and this is a great loss for the crop.
