The Federal Minister of Health explains the reason for the delay in the arrival of the AstraZeneca vaccine in the country

This is a historic step towards the global goal to ensure a fair distribution of Corona virus vaccines across the world, and this is the first batch of vaccines to Iraq. Note that another shipment of 1.1 million doses of Kovacs vaccine is planned to be delivered to Iraq in the coming weeks, and it will continue until 20% of the Iraqi population is covered before the end of 2021.
She indicated that there is still a long way to go for the Corona pandemic to roam Iraq and various parts of the world, as the transmission of infection continues to be intensive, to form tremendous pressure on hospitals, intensive care units, and health sector workers. While preventive measures can be effective in curbing virus transmission, their effectiveness depends heavily on their strict application by all citizens. The arrival of vaccines and the launch of a nationwide vaccination campaign will also be a game-changer in the battle against Coronavirus. On this occasion, the Iraqi Minister of Health, Dr. Hassan Muhammad Al-Tamimi, said, according to a UNAMI statement: “Today, the vaccines that we have been waiting for have arrived in the country since the last week of February. His Excellency the Minister of Health added, "The Ministry of Health will send these vaccines immediately to all health directorates in Baghdad, in all governorates, and in the Kurdistan Region, to be used in the protection of people classified within the priority groups, according to the national plan to spread the vaccine."
In the same context, Dr. Ahmed Zouiten, the representative of the World Health Organization in Iraq, said: “This is a historic point in the response to the Corona epidemic in Iraq, as receiving and using these vaccines is a step in the right direction in controlling the epidemic in Iraq. These vaccines are very safe and effective in preventing corona virus infection, and the associated risks of hospitalization and death.
Dr. Ahmed continued, "We would like to congratulate the Ministry of Health and the Iraqi government for all the efforts made in responding to Corona virus in general, and ensuring that these life-saving vaccines reach the country. With more vaccines received according to the World Health Organization's emergency use list, and with the manufacture of more Globally, we are looking forward to receiving more customizations, and more vaccines from the Kovacs facility, in the coming weeks and months. "
For his part, Paul Edwards, a representative of UNICEF and an agency in Iraq, said, according to a UNAMI statement, that “UNICEF and the World Health Organization have been working with the Ministry of Health around the clock to make sure that Iraq has enough syringes, vaccination cards, and advanced cold chain facilities to store Vaccines are safe, in anticipation and preparation for such a day. We have also trained thousands of health sector workers in vaccination centers all over Iraq. We have been waiting for this day for months.
