Nujaifi officially announces Salim al-Jobouri as candidate for the presidency of the parliament

Shafaq News / The leader in the National Union of Forces and Speaker of outgoing parliament announced that MP, Salim al-Jobouri was selected for the post of the presidency of Iraq's parliament as a candidate for the Sunni component

According to a statement issued by "Motahedoun" bloc, Nujaifi held an "important" meeting on Saturday evening that was attended by MPs of coalition forces in Iraq

Nujaifi requested from present MPs, who represent the Sunni component responsible for submitting a candidate for the Presidency of the parliament to select a candidate as a contribution in driving change and progress in the political process

The statement said that "before the election, which took place under the supervision of Nujaifi, the candidates pledged not to accept a third term for Maliki, and absolute commitment to the interests and aspirations of their constituents

The statement noted that after the election took place , Salim al-Jobouri won the confidence of the present MPs and was adopted as a candidate for the Sunni component of the Presidency of the parliament , with a pledge of his support by all those present

A parliamentary source has said earlier, on Sunday that the National Union of Forces MP Salim al-jobouri was nominated for the post of speaker of parliament a few hours before the Parliament meeting

The appointment of the head of the Iraqi parliament at a meeting of the Legislative Council is the first step towards forming a government after more than three months from the general election.

This comes at a time when the government is striving to respond to a campaign by ISIL militants who have seized large areas in northern and western Iraq.
