Experts and doctors: Iraq is on the verge of a tsunami of mental illness due to the ban and closure

Baghdad / Ali Abdul-Khaliq
Psychologists monitor a steady escalation in the local health crises resulting from the epidemiological and preventive ban due to the Corona pandemic in Iraq since March of last year until today.
According to several indicators reported by experts in the field of mental health and even doctors in isolation wards, that those infected with the virus were facing at the beginning of the epidemic a psychological stigma at the level of the family and neighborhood, as well as “simulating the subconscious with infection” with Corona, which exacerbated the loads and psychological burdens on them, and the matter expanded. To include even non-infected people who are now suffering from the consequences of the ban and social distancing.
With the increasing certainty that the spread of the Corona pandemic will continue with the arrival of the mutated wave from India, pressures are increasing on the health sector to confront an unusual crisis that includes Corona patients and others who suffer from health restrictions.
Several doctors and students trained at Ibn Rushd Psychiatric Hospital told Al-Mada that “the Corona pandemic has caused a significant increase in inpatients in the hospital.”
The doctors attributed the matter to the psychological breakdowns that citizens suffer as a result of the general closure and home quarantine, in addition to the increasing concern about the possibility of contracting the virus, which exacerbated the psychological crises and complications for the patient.
The Rusafa Health Department in Baghdad said, through recent studies, that there is an increase in the number of patients with mental disorders, and that 20% of the patients suffer from psychological disorders, including anxiety and depression.
A number of physicians working in the field of psychology explained that "mental disorders may be more severe and more during the period of infection with Corona, and may reach the point of acute psychosis in some patients."
Psychiatrist Muhammad Al-Saadi told Al-Mada that "breaking the health ban in the second wave was most likely due to the economic factor, and also because of the increasing feeling of distress from homes."
He added that "the closure is linked to an increase in the possibility of depression, which requires psychological and social support with the weakest links in society and for those suffering poverty, unemployment and slum dwellers," noting that "the country may witness a sharp rise in mental disorders resulting from the health ban."
He continued by saying that "according to our inspections, Iraq is no different from any country that is forced to impose these restrictions, but ignorance in the methods of psychological treatment may harm, and also resorting to different methods to alleviate the states of disorder that they suffer from may backfire." According to what he is already suffering on the human level and the efficiency of the infrastructure to cope with the remainder of the period of the spread of the Corona virus, the Iraqi health infrastructure has enough pregnancy. % Of Iraqis suffer from high blood pressure, and more than 14% of them suffer from diabetes, while 30% of the Iraqi people stand on the lists of obese people, while the percentage of male smokers is close to 38%.
Corona's conditions are hardening primarily for mentally ill patients, as the available data indicate that most school students do not practice the physical activity required to reduce the repercussions of non-chronic mental illnesses, all of this came with the start of the Corona pandemic and the imposition of strict preventive measures that disrupted the school year, and until 2007, the numbers confirmed that 16.5% of the population suffers psychological disturbances, in addition to the absence of any clear images of psychological support due to the consequences of the health ban from the response plan to confront the Corona epidemic presented by Iraq.
Psychiatrist Arjan Hidayat Anwar told Al-Mada, that “the person who suffered under the conditions of confinement and home quarantine due to Corona suffered chronic psychological distress, in addition to the anxiety of contracting the disease, and this is what makes the patient suffer in the first stage of breathing and sleep problems.”
Hidayat added that "the second stage of anxiety is exacerbation to become depression, with the occurrence of irritable mood and difficulty in focusing," indicating that "a person with corona suffers from various psychological diseases close to suicide attempts, and these are all symptoms that appear faster on those with Corona than healthy ones."
The psychiatrist confirmed, examining Corona patients who had entered the stage of despair from treatment and refused to take their medicines with a clear desire to commit suicide, and chemotherapy often begins with anti-anxiety drugs within two weeks, with cognitive behavioral sessions to rearrange thoughts and spread hope.
He added that there are several special cases, including, "The person sick with Corona becomes depressed and blames himself because he believes that he transmitted the infection to others, especially relatives or parents in particular, and depression may double if one of the parents dies."
