Earthlink Deputy CEO Dr. Alaa Jassim revealed, on Thursday, that there are more than 100 unlicensed internet companies in Iraq, while he confirmed the existence of 23 companies licensed by the Iraqi government.
"Iraq has 23 official companies and more than 120 informal companies, and this is the main reason for all the problems of the Internet sector," Jasim said during an online session.
He explained that "any person can rent an office for him, puts a sign for the name of the company and starts buying the Internet from the ministry or from one of the ministry's partners or by smuggling, and starts selling naturally without having a work permit." A tower in one area, and this is a major obstacle for large and officially registered companies. "
He stressed that "any specialist in any country in the world who hears the existence of 100 companies in Iraq will say it is impossible to provide good internet service in it," noting that "the presence of a large number of unlicensed companies means that these companies do not pay guarantees, insurance, or sales tax, and consequently." "Their operating costs are less than those of large companies by 20 to 40 percent, and if they get access to the Internet by smuggling, the cost is 60 percent or more lower than that of large companies."
He pointed out that "the only solution to eliminate all these problems is the FTTH service, and we launched this service in Zayouna and started with 2,000 homes, and the Ministry’s revenues were three times higher than previous revenues." Another region, and within 3 years, more than 90% of Iraq will be covered by this service. "
