The ministry's spokesman, Ahmed Al-Alawi told {Euphrates News}, "Iraqi tourism has been greatly affected, like other countries, by the Corona pandemic," stressing that "Iraq today is experiencing great losses in the field of tourism, and on the other hand, the situation is embarrassing internally and it must obtain resources."
He added, "We have losses in the first place because investment in tourism cities is almost non-existent, and we have no investment, for example, on archaeological tourism. This issue became clear after the Pope's visit to Ur last March."
"We have 15,000 officially registered archaeological sites, but there is no tourist orientation towards these sites, and there are no programs with the concerned authorities to attract foreign tourists into Iraq," Al-Alawi said.
He stressed, "The Ministry of Culture is interested in all the details of tourism in the country, and it works through the Tourism Authority, including the possibility of restoring life to these facilities, and we are only waiting for the opportunity to arrange the preventive situation, and a proposal was put forward to provide prevention for the tourist delegation and to take precautions, especially after taking the vaccine."
