MP Muhammad Shia Al-Sudani asked, on Wednesday, a parliamentary question to the Minister of Agriculture about the rise in prices and the justifications for not opening imports to restore balance in prices.
A document obtained by Mawazine News stated that "Representative Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani asked a parliamentary question to the Minister of Agriculture, saying, (What is the mechanism used by the Ministry of Agriculture with regard to price control and the balance between product protection and consumer protection in accordance with the legal stipulation to protect Iraqi products). And the consumer?, What are the technical and economic reasons behind the significant and influential price hike in the markets with regard to products (eggs and chicken) and their direct negative impact on the citizen? What are the legal measures and measures taken against commercial relations that are tainted by corruption between those concerned in the ministry and producers?
According to the document: "The question also included, what are the justifications according to the perspective of the public interest in the minister's use of his powers to issue decisions banning the import of eggs and chicken pieces to protect producers and not to protect a local product? What are the justifications for closing the import of the product (eggs) after the class prices rose to 7000 dinars? While the coverage of local production amounted to 30% of the consumption need and 6000 dinars for the value of a kilo of chicken meat, while the local production coverage amounted to 20% of the consumption need? What are the reasons for the ministry granting import licenses as an exception, in contrast to the ministry’s policy to prevent import?
Al-Sudani called on the Presidency of the House of Representatives to “follow up on the question and inform the results of the answers, in accordance with the oversight role of the members of the House in accordance with Article (61) of the Constitution and Article (29) of the law.” Ended 29/A43]
