The Strategic Center for Human Rights in Iraq said today, Wednesday, that the last provincial elections took place eight years ago, appealing to Parliament.
In a statement received by Mawazine News, the director of the center’s office in Baghdad, Hazem Al-Rudaini, called on the Iraqi parliament to “amend the provincial elections law, similar to the Iraqi parliament elections law No. 9 of 2021.”
Al-Rudaini added, "It is not within the authority of Parliament to dissolve the provincial councils, and this was confirmed by the Federal Court because it was formed under the constitution."
He continued, "
Al-Rudaini continued, "The appointment of governors by the prime minister violates the constitution, which stipulates his election by the provincial council exclusively," stressing the need to "speed up setting a date for holding provincial elections in 2022, since the last elections were held 8 years ago."
