Agriculture attributes the high prices of animal products to the rise of the dollar: most of the feed is imported

The Ministry of Agriculture attributed the high prices of animal products to the rise in the price of the dollar, noting that most of the fodder is imported, while a government advisor saw that the damage to the animal sector and the accompanying flu infections and the disruption of some fields caused prices to rise.
In a related context, specialists in economic affairs emphasized that the rise constitutes a large proportion of the national income and the gross domestic product, which is a support for local production and activating its activity.
The spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture, Hamid Al-Nayef, said in an interview with (Al-Mada), that "the reason for the high prices of animal products is due to the high price of the dollar," noting that "most of the feed is imported and dealing with it is according to the price of the dollar, not the Iraqi dinar."
The prices of many food commodities, including table eggs, chicken, and others, have recently risen in local markets, and traders attributed that rise to the increase in the dollar's exchange rate against the Iraqi dinar.
In turn, the agricultural advisor and expert, Adel Al-Mukhtar, agreed with the spokesman of the Ministry of Agriculture that the reason for the increase in the prices of animal products is due to the increase in the price of the dollar.
Al-Mukhtar said in an interview with Al-Mada that "the rise in the price of the dollar led in turn to a rise in the prices of animal feed and an increase in the cost of production."
Al-Mukhtar added, "The cost of producing chicken feed has increased by 70% from imported ones."
The agricultural expert points out that "the bird flu infections that have appeared recently and breeders raced to sell their birds widely between the great damage in the animal sector, in addition to the disruption of some fields from production, which caused a rise in the prices of livestock."
Al-Mukhtar called for "the development of a national program to protect the local product, activate poultry fields in the correct manner, and make prices reasonable for the citizen."
And the Minister of Agriculture, Muhammad Karim Al-Khafaji, set, early last week, an amount of 5,000 dinars per egg layer to relieve the burden of citizens.
And the Ministry of Agriculture stated in a statement received by (Al-Mada) that “the Minister of Agriculture stressed that the price of the egg layer should be (5000-5250) dinars, in order not to burden the citizen and to find price stability, during discussions of cooperation between the ministry and the private sector of investors in the poultry sector. “.
Al-Khafaji stressed, according to the statement, "the ministry is proceeding with protecting the local product and achieving the appropriate economic feasibility for investors, as well as processing feed materials while discussing the poultry, import and smuggling file."
The Minister of Agriculture directed to “the necessity of employing a specialized veterinarian in every poultry field to follow up on biosecurity procedures and veterinary treatments in coordination with the Veterinary Department, as well as emphasizing the conditions for establishing poultry fields, taking into account the special space and scientific controls, as well as importing vaccines for the treatment of bird flu.” “.
In turn, the economic affairs specialist, Basem Jamil Antoine, said in an interview with Al-Mada that "the rise in animal product prices is a support for the national economy and its activity."
And Antoine adds, "A country that owns large quantities of livestock and at competitive prices with other countries will be in a good economic situation that will make it unnecessary to import."
The specialist in economic affairs points out, "The rise constitutes a large proportion of the national income and the gross domestic product."
Antoine called for "expanding the fields, supporting them with soft loans, and providing the necessities of veterinary health sustainability."
For its part, the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture, Water and Marshlands called on the government and the concerned authorities to tighten control measures and bring price manipulators to justice, while calling for the opening of imports to “curb” the rise in the prices of local goods.
The head of the committee, Salam Al-Shammari, said in a statement received by (Al-Mada), that "the prices of local animal products, such as eggs and chicken, have witnessed a remarkable increase during the past few years, which has clearly affected the general public."
He added that "there are popular demands for the return of imports, especially eggs, in order to curb the significant rise in the prices of the local product, which is being carried out by some weak-minded people who are only concerned with obscene wealth at the expense of citizens."
Al-Shammari stressed the need for "the ministry to expand direct sales outlets to citizens at an appropriate price for table eggs and chicken, and to start taking legal measures for every manipulator of government-set prices."
