The Border Ports Authority confirmed, on Thursday, that Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi directed the formation of a higher committee to review all the levies imposed by the authorities operating in the ports and to study preventing their expansion.
The head of the authority, Omar Al-Waeli, said in an interview with the Iraqi News Agency, and followed by "Al-Iqtisad News", that "the authority diagnosed the issue of taxation from two sides, by exercising its supervisory functions over the work of the departments operating at the border crossings."
And he added, "A vote was taken that two parties would not collect money for the same service, after discussing it in the sessions of the Commission's Council."
He pointed out that "the vote was based on a letter that was previously issued by the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers - the Legal Department through an inquiry sent by the authority," noting that "the answer to the question was, that the collection is from the entitlement of the entity whose service work falls within its competence Regardless of the ownership or ownership of the device, whether it is a bridge scale or sonars.”
And he continued, "The issue was raised during the last meeting with Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi, noting that the levies have become very large by the departments operating at the border crossings and need to be reviewed and refined in proportion to the type of service provided and the need for it."
He stressed that "the Prime Minister directed the formation of a higher committee whose mission is to review all the levies imposed by the authorities operating in the border crossings and study to prevent their expansion, as it burdens importers and traders, and makes our border crossings expelling, and not attractive to trade exchange."
He pointed out that "the outlets continue to follow up, to reach a result that serves the commercial process."
