The Minister of Water Resources, Mahdi Rashid Al-Hamdani, announced, on Sunday, that water releases from Iran have reached zero, while indicating that solutions are being taken to reduce the damage of water scarcity in Diyala.
Al-Hamdani said in a press interview, "Water releases from Iran have reached zero," referring to "resorting to the international community in order to share the damage and release Iraq's water share according to international conventions."
He pointed out that "solutions are being taken to mitigate the damage in Diyala due to water scarcity," noting that "the water storage is good to secure the summer and winter plan and drinking water."
He continued, "We talked with Iran and Turkey to agree on a water-sharing protocol, but we did not get an answer so far," adding that "things cannot remain without an agreement on water releases with riparian countries."
The Minister of Water Resources stated, "The crisis will worsen in Diyala province if Iran continues to cut off water from the Sirwan, Karun and Karkha rivers."

Iraq threatened to resort to the international community, if Iran insists on continuing to cut the tributaries of the rivers flowing into Diyala Governorate, which is witnessing a drought.

The Iraqi Minister of Water Resources, Mahdi Rashid Al-Hamdani, said during a press conference on the sidelines of his inspection of water projects in Diyala, that "the Iranian side did not show any response to us and is still cutting off water from the Sirwan, Karun, Karkha and Alwand rivers and streams, which has caused severe damage to the residents of Diyala, which depends on a regular basis." directly on the waters coming from Iran.

Al-Hamdani threatened, "If Iran insists not to cooperate with Iraq regarding the water crisis in accordance with international conventions, we will have to resort to UNESCO, the United Nations and human rights to obtain our rights from the common tributaries and streams with Iran."

However, he added, "We refuse to go to such solutions, and the matter depends on the cooperation of the Iranian side according to the foundations of good-neighborly relations and common interests."

Al-Hamdani criticized "the Iranian side refused to hold a meeting that was scheduled in mid-June and was postponed due to the Iranian elections, and they promised us to hold a meeting after the elections, but that did not materialize."

The Minister of Water Resources stressed that "there are no positive signs from the Iranian side regarding the water crisis and the sharing of regional damage, although we are aware of the size of Iran's water reserves, but everyone should share the damages of water scarcity and lack of water revenues."

Diyala is exposed to the worst water crisis in its history due to the lack of rain and the cutting of rivers and streams by neighboring countries, as well as poor storage and programming of water releases from Lake Hamrin, the largest water reserve in Diyala.
