The Acting Minister of Electricity, Adel Karim, confirmed, Thursday (July 29, 2021), that Iraq will sign a contract to connect its electrical system with the Gulf countries "within the next two weeks", and thus obtain "stability" in electricity in the south of the country, while revealing negotiations to import energy. From Syria.

The official news agency quoted Karim as saying, and IQ News followed him, that his ministry "concluded a set of agreements with neighboring countries, including the Gulf states, Jordan, Turkey and Iran to supply Iraq with electric power, and within two weeks or more (the contract will be) signed," noting that this contract "Basra will be equipped with 500-1000 megawatts, which will give a very large stability to the energy flow in the southern region in general."
He pointed out, "There are negotiations with Saudi Arabia to connect electricity or bring energy, and the connection will be either with Yusufiya or Samawa, and the first phase will include 500 megawatts, and the second phase will be 1000 megawatts, and this will also have a very big role in stabilizing the electrical system."
The Minister of Electricity added that the agreement with Jordan will provide the western region, within the first phase, with 150 megawatts, and the second phase will include 500 megawatts, noting that "the first phase will provide a group consisting of Al-Qaim district and border areas." The depth, and the second phase will be for the city of Ramadi and other areas in Anbar."
And he indicated that "the current available capacity is 19,000 megawatts to 21,000 megawatts, while Iraq currently needs 35,000 megawatts, which means that we suffer from a shortage of 15,000 megawatts."
He continued, "The ministry has not yet received any amount within its allocations in the financial budget, in addition to cutting off half of the budget allocated to the ministry by the House of Representatives, and with this, the Ministry of Electricity is trying as much as possible to perform its duty."
And he added, "If the ministry receives great support from all sides, it will be able to increase production by up to 5,000 megawatts, and thus increase production hours," pointing out that there are short, medium and long-term plans, which aim to reach 45,000 megawatts, within the next 5 to 6 years. ".
He pointed out that "terrorism has affected the energy file in two ways, the first is the targeting of stations located in Baiji, western Iraq and other areas, and the second is the implementation of continuous terrorist operations that have led to the destruction of electric towers," stressing that "these operations have affected the processing hours and sometimes they are a cause in extinguishing stations and reducing the hours of preparing citizens.

On the solar energy project, he explained that this file "was withdrawn from the Ministry of Electricity, and it is currently managed by the Energy Council and the Investment Authority, but the ministry asked the Energy and Ministers Councils to return the file to the Ministry of Electricity, as it is a sectoral ministry that carries out this process."
Regarding imported Iranian gas, Karim explained that "the Iranian gas invested by the Ministry of Electricity reaches the limits of 6000 megawatts, and if it weren't for Iranian gas, a disaster would have occurred in the electricity sector, and this would have led to the downfall of the electrical system," "Iraq for many years will be unable to dispense with." on Iranian gas .
And regarding the installation of contract employees on permanent owners, the agency’s Minister of Electricity said, “The process of installing contracts continues in the ministry according to the budget law, and although the numbers are very large and the ministry has a surplus, everyone who has exceeded 5 years is directly confirmed, and there is an independent committee in the ministry working with the department.” The administration receives the lists and checks them to issue administrative orders for their appointment.
