    {Local: Al Furat News} The Ministry of Electricity has started the implementation of electronic collection and prepayment projects and the installation of smart meters in selected areas in the capital and the holy Karbala and Najaf governorates.
    A spokesman for the Ministry of Electricity Ahmad Abadi, in a press statement, "The government orientations and the ministry now is moving towards the implementation of the project installation of electronic meters and has already been working in this experiment project Basmajh and in Karbala was taking electronic readings, currently intending to ministry work projects collection of electronic and installation of smart meters and prepaid Owerij and Yarmouk and parts of the governorates of Karbala and Najaf in order to study these projects and the extent of their success, and then generalize them.”
    He added that "the purpose of implementing the project of installing electronic meters is not only to maximize collection fees, but rather to convert irregular subscribers into consumers, and certainly there are slums and there are irregular areas from which the value of energy is not collected as a result of the ministry not being able to install the municipality's meters in order not to Electricity, given that these abuses and the disintegration of the areas have been legitimized, and therefore the bulk of the energy consumed in these areas is considered wasted. Therefore, the project to install electronic meters will seek to transfer the irregular subscribers to consumers and will help consumers to rehabilitate the distribution network after installing the installations. Technical and financial for the ministry, and the citizen will benefit primarily from these projects as a result of the service provided.
    Al-Abadi explained that “the other purpose of implementing these projects is to inform the citizen of the high cost of energy that the electricity industry costs, and consequently it will regulate its energy consumption,” noting that “the project will be with the same tariff and there will be no increase in the value of the subsidy or the subsidy that was imposed by the government. With a rate of 90% for the tariff, it will seek to enhance the resources of collection and limit the losses in the distribution networks.”
