The General Company for Ports of Iraq, one of the formations of the Ministry of Transport, revealed the latest developments in the implementation of the Great Port of Faw project, and while it announced the completion of five berths within the first phase of the project's implementation, it confirmed that it had attracted many Iraqi workforce.
The director of the media and relations department in the company, Anmar Abdel Moneim Al-Safi, said in an interview with the Iraqi News Agency and followed by "Al-Iqtisad News", that "work is still going on in the great port of Faw and with a clear speed of completion, especially in the internal roads, the association and the silk tunnel known as the "submerged tunnel", which reaches Its length is about 2,400 km, and it links the roads between the great port of Faw and Umm Qasr, with a limit of 63-64 km.
Al-Safi added, "The work is now taking place in a large way with different mechanisms and equipment to implement the tunnel through a huge work, as it is the only one in the Arab Gulf region and even in the Arab region, where there is no tunnel in the region that passes under water."
He pointed out that "work is also underway to complete other internal roads leading to the port of Faw, especially after the arrival of the (giant equipment) that works to improve the quality of the soil and install the pillars to build the berths of the great port of Faw as planned without any delay or obstacles that may hinder work." He pointed out that "the work, according to the speculative timing allocated to it, will be completed in full and according to the plan prepared for its completion within approximately 3 to 4 years."
With regard to the port berths, Al-Safi confirmed, that "work is underway in its first phase as it is planned to build five berths with its infrastructure, as it was completed in accordance with the contract signed with the Korean Daewoo Company, the Ministry of Transport and the General Company for Ports of Iraq," noting that "in the phase". The last work in the port will be completed by about 100 berths.
On the provision of job opportunities for local workers, Al-Safi stressed that "the Al-Faw port project has attracted large Iraqi hands, as all those who now know the mechanisms and equipment in the port are Iraqi hands," noting that "the Korean company Daewoo relied in its work on different nationalities only on the the technicians you need.
