The water crisis between Baghdad and Tehran has returned to the fore again, as the Iraqi Minister of Water Resources, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] , confirmed that no agreement has been reached with Iran regarding his country's water share.
Al-Hamdani told local media on Tuesday, "We have important pressure papers in the field of obtaining our water rights," according to the Iraqi News Agency, "conscious."
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
He also added: "We have not reached an agreement with Iran regarding Iraq's water share."
To that, he explained, "We have indications that Iran is digging tunnels and changing the water course," noting that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is on its way to internationalizing the water file with Iran.

Recourse to "International Justice"

Al-Hamdani stated that there are violations of international laws on water by Iran, pointing out: "We have officially informed Tehran of its violations and we have not received a response."
He also pointed out that "resorting to the International Court of Justice is our card [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] ," stressing that "upstream countries do not have the right to seize water."
In addition, he noted that Iraq was able to store water in dams.

Activation of a memorandum of understanding with Turkey

It is noteworthy that Al-Hamdani had announced on Saturday the activation of a memorandum of understanding with Turkey, signed in 2009 and amended in 2014, allowing Iraq to obtain a full water share from the common rivers.
Since 2003, Iraq has been suffering from a decline in the water level across the Tigris and Euphrates rivers as a result of the water policies adopted by Turkey and Iran to reduce release rates, change the tributaries' paths, and build giant dams on them.
