The General Company for Ports of Iraq confirmed that it is working diligently to improve the depths of the navigation channels in order to be able to receive large ships, while noting that the beginning of next year will witness the completion of (the submerged water tunnel or the silk tunnel), as the completion rate has reached more than 75%.
The company's media director, Anmar Al-Safi, said, "The company is working seriously and hard to improve the depths of the navigation channels by restoring the design depth of these navigation channels and berth interfaces to 12.5 meters in order to be able to receive large ships," noting that "in the past, the large cargoes were placed by ships. In nearby ports, they are unloaded and transported in small ships, but now the large ships depart from their ports and reach our ports directly, even if they are large and gigantic, as they are able to dock in the Iraqi ports safely and securely.”
And regarding the Grand Faw port, he stated that “work is underway on a large scale in the port, and the company held a meeting with the general manager of the Korean (Daewoo) company, which is implementing the project of the Great Port of Faw, and it was agreed to expedite the completion of work in the port within the time periods specified in the contract of 3 years and 6 years. the coming months.”
He explained that "the Director-General of Ports of Iraq, Farhan Al-Fartousi, appealed to the company to abide by its timing, and it has expressed its reassurance to the Iraqi people that the work will be completed within the legal deadlines, or perhaps before the agreed-upon periods."
He added that "work is underway on the internal roads of the port and the submerged tunnel (Silk Tunnel), which is the largest and the first of its kind in the Middle East and the international Gulf, which connects with the Al-Khor Al-Makhzan highway to Turkey and then the Al-Zubair highway to the north of Iraq. In Berlin, to transport all the goods that arrive at the great port of Faw from India or from East Asia or from the Gulf to Europe through a short and abbreviated way, which is the Iraqi dry channel through the port of Faw and the Grand Tunnel.”
Al-Safi pointed out that “the completion of the submerged water tunnel has reached more than 75%, and it is on the rise and a very positive development. Which was contracted to complete the projects and the last five berths,” noting that “the company and the Ministry of Transport are interested in completing the project with its legal and contractual timings.”
He explained that "the depth of the port agreed upon is 19.8 meters, and this figure cannot be tampered with because it is among the designs developed by the Italian designer, which is being followed up and monitored by the Ports Administration and the Italian consultant."
