Washington renewed its commitment to support the Iraqi security forces
The United States of America expressed, on Wednesday, its “deep concern” about the continued escalation of attacks by the Islamic State, ISIS, throughout Iraq, according to a statement by State Department spokesman Ned Price.
The statement expressed Washington's condolences to the families of the victims and the wounded in the attack that took place yesterday in the Makhmour area, which killed 10 Peshmerga and three civilians.
Washington renewed its commitment to support the Iraqi security forces, including the Peshmerga, while continuing the fight against ISIS.
At dawn on Friday, an ISIS attack in Makhmour district killed at least 13 people, including three villagers and ten Peshmerga soldiers.
Areas adjacent to the Kurdistan region of Iraq witnessed an increase in ISIS activity in less than a week, and before yesterday's attack, five Peshmerga were killed and four others were wounded in the explosion of an explosive device targeting their military vehicle, on the night of Saturday-Sunday.
The organization targets military sites from time to time, and last month carried out an attack that killed thirty civilians in the Shiite neighborhood of Sadr City in the capital.
It is noteworthy that a United Nations report published last February indicated that “ISIS maintains a large secret presence in Iraq and Syria and wages a continuous insurgency on both sides of the border between the two countries, with its extension over the lands it previously controlled.”
