The number of injuries recorded throughout Wasit Governorate as a result of mines reached more than 5,000, while the governorate recorded more than 80 deaths.
The director of the governorate’s environment, Sabah Abbas, said, in a press statement, that “the border strip area between Iraq and Iran within the governorate, which is more than 130 km long, is completely contaminated with mines, and these mines are still present.”
Abbas added that "the presence of these mines deprived large areas in the border area of Zorbatia from investing in the tourism sector," calling on "the concerned authorities to take appropriate measures to remove these mines according to an integrated plan."
