Yesterday, Saturday, the Babylon Chamber of Industry confirmed that 80% of the factories in the province are suspended, and attributed this to the absence of the government's vision to advance or preserve the reality of the industry.
The head of the Babylon Chamber of Industry, Muhammad Al-Taie, told Al-Mada that "the chamber has about 2,500 factories officially registered in the province, the majority of which are craft factories that produce various consumer goods."
Al-Tai added, "20% of these factories have maintained their production status, even if it is faltering and below the required level, but they are trying to survive as much as possible."
He pointed out, "The industrial sector in Babylon needs government support and the development of the necessary plans to restore life to the local product to restart the factories again."
Al-Taie pointed out that "the support is limited to granting loans on impossible terms that are impossible for factory owners to obtain."
Most of the factories have been stationed in the industrial zone in the center of Hilla since the nineties of the last century until today, as they provided thousands of job opportunities for citizens, even from outside the governorate.
Haider al-Jubouri, the owner of a molasses factory, confirms in an interview with Al-Mada that "more than 300 molasses production plants were working over the course of time with three meals, providing job opportunities for thousands of workers, as well as providing a high-quality local product."
Al-Jubouri added that "the situation of laboratories since 2003 began to decline until the laboratories stopped by 90%, and what works from them is thinking of leaving work also due to the lack of plans necessary to protect the local product."
Factory owners complain about the amount of amounts collected from them by the concerned departments in the governorate, such as taxes, rent allowances and waste removal fees, which are not equal to the level of services provided to them, especially in the field of waste removal and sewage collection.
