An informed source said, on Tuesday, that there was a semi-official agreement between the "Azm and Progress" alliance for Muhammad al-Halbousi to assume the presidency of Parliament, while the position of Vice President of the Republic will be from Azm.
The source stated to NRT Arabia (December 28, 2021), that "in the event that the agreement is not implemented, the Azm Alliance will have five candidates for the presidency of Parliament, namely Khaled Al-Obeidi, Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani, Muthanna Al-Samarrai, Abu Mazen and Thabet Al-Absi."
He added, "More than 10 representatives of the Sunni component will defect from the Azm bloc if Al-Halbousi is voted as Speaker of Parliament," noting that "the dissidents will go to the opposition."
