, a prominent Iraqi official in Baghdad revealed a new movement within the office of the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mustafa Al-Kazemi, to create the conditions for a new round of talks between Riyadh and Tehran in Baghdad during the coming period, ruling out that the Saudi and Iranian sides would represent high-level delegations.
The Iraqi Foreign Minister, Fouad Hussein, visited Tehran last week at the head of a high-ranking government delegation that also included National Security Adviser Qassem al-Araji, and met with a number of officials there.
Hussein and his Iranian counterpart, Hussein Amir Abdollahian, held a press conference in Tehran after the talks held by the Iraqi delegation, in which he confirmed that "the Saudi-Iranian talks are close to resuming in Baghdad."
The Iraqi foreign minister added that his country is looking forward to holding a fifth round of negotiations between Iran and Saudi Arabia, speaking of Iraq's playing an important role in the dialogue between Tehran and Riyadh.
Baghdad has previously hosted four meetings between Saudi and Iranian officials, with the aim of bringing the two sides closer together on a number of contentious issues.
Today, Tuesday, a senior Iraqi official in Baghdad, on condition of anonymity, said that Hussein and al-Araji are conducting a wide movement in preparation for a new meeting in Baghdad between the Iranians and the Saudis.
He added that "the Saudi and Iranian sides agreed to the new round of talks, but so far it is not certain who will attend the round on a large diplomatic or governmental representation from both countries," revealing that during the past two days, many contacts took place in this context.
The same official considered that "the Iraqi movement and the quest to secure a new round of talks between the two sides come from an Iraqi conviction that easing tension in the region in general will reflect positively on the Iraqi security and political situation, especially in this politically tense period in Iraq," as he put it.
The same official suggested that the new meeting would be held "in the near future, if nothing hinders that."
Yesterday, Monday, the Iraqi Foreign Minister received a phone call from his Saudi counterpart, Faisal bin Farhan.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Al-Sahaf said that during the call with bin Farhan, Hussein discussed "continuous coordination and consultation in various fields."
Al-Sahaf added, "The two sides exchanged visions and assessments on the overall developments of regional issues of interest to both sides, facing the various challenges facing the region, and advancing peaceful solutions that would achieve security and stability, and advance the process of cooperation to achieve peace and development aspirations."
