{Local: Al Furat News} Iranian Minister of Roads and Cities Building Rostam Qasemi said that the railway linking project between Iran and Iraq will start working soon because it is gaining importance for both of them together.
Qassemi, in a televised programme, referred to the railway project between Shalamcheh, Iran, and Basra, Iraq, explaining that this project will enter into force soon.
He pointed out that Iran and Iraq have agreed to set a date for the start of implementation of the project, and a joint investment and operation company will be established within the next two months.
Qassemi noted that the length of the railway is 32 km, and it is important to build a bridge to link the two countries, which specialists will start studying its implementation.
He pointed out that Iranian specialists will be dispatched to Iraq within the coming days to clear the railway track of mines, and that the Iraqi side should prepare the track within 6 months.
Qassemi expected the project to be completed within two years, at a cost of about $120 million, divided equally by both countries.
This railway line will facilitate the export of Iranian goods to Iraq and will extend to the coasts of the Mediterranean in the future.
On the 29th of last month, the Minister of Transport, Nasser Al-Shibli, denied the signing of a railway linkage agreement with Iran, and stated that "a meeting minutes were signed with the Iranian side regarding the railway link, which is not an agreement."
He added, "We have given a pledge to the Iraqis that any railway connection will not be possible to complete until after the completion of the Faw port, as well as the completion of the railways and its infrastructure to be ready to receive the connection with any country."
