The Iranian Minister of Roads and Urban Reconstruction, Rostam Qassemi, stated that his country will start work on the railway link project with Iraq by clearing the track by dispatching experts to clear mines, estimating at the same time that the financial cost of this project will reach about 120 million US dollars.
It is scheduled to extend the link between the Iranian city of Shalamjah and the Iraqi Basra.
In statements carried by Iranian media, the Iranian minister stressed the importance of rail linking between Iran and Iraq for both countries, whether in terms of transit of goods or transporting passengers, especially during the Arbain days of Imam Hussein.
Qassemi said that during the new agreement between the two countries, a date was set for the start of construction of this railway, and a joint investment and operating company should be established within the next two months.
He also pointed out that the length of the line is 32 km, and the important issue in the project is the construction of a bridge between Iran and Iraq, adding: It was decided before the establishment of the joint company that the experts of the two parties conduct the necessary studies on the construction of the bridge.
The minister also said, "In the coming days, we will dispatch experts to clear mines on the path of this railway in Iraq."
He indicated that the project will be implemented within a maximum of two years and that its cost will range between 100 and 120 million dollars. He said that the initial agreement is parity between the two sides in the investments needed for the project.
Qassemi continued by saying: With the implementation of the project, our exports to Iraq will become less expensive and safer, and this railway will be linked to the Mediterranean in the future.
