{Local: Al Furat News} A technical delegation from the Ministry of Water Resources is visiting Istanbul in the middle of this month, to see the water storage available in Turkish dams and reservoirs and plans for its operation, including its future and current plans.
The official spokesman for the ministry, Counselor Aoun Diab, said, "Iraq, in a qualitative leap in the field of understandings related to shared water, is visiting Istanbul in the middle of this month, to see Turkey's water reserves available in its dams and reservoirs, especially the plan to operate the Alisu dams on the Tigris River, and Ataturk on the River Euphrates, during the current and next summer seasons.
The wave of rain that fell on the country during the past month, contributed to compensating a small part of Iraq's water reserves, which were consumed during three consecutive dry seasons that passed through the country.
Diab stressed that "the ministry's goal is to identify Turkey's operational plans for dams, to ensure that equitable water shares reach Iraq in quantity and quality, to meet its needs for drinking water, and for watering orchards and vegetables. Noting that "the area of other crops that are planted in the summer will depend on what is achieved from the country's water storage during the snowmelt period in Turkey, which are the months: March, April and May."
Most of the summer crops require large amounts of water, just like the sorghum and rice crops.
The resource adviser said that "the second item on this context is to approve the rehabilitation of the Iraqi-Turkish research center in the organization of the channel. It was agreed upon with the Turkish side, in addition to establishing a rest house and furnishing it to receive experts.”
He stressed that "the ministry's ambition is to reach clear and accurate numbers regarding water sharing between Iraq and the riparian countries that are also determined by the operational plan with the aim of knowing the water reality during the entire water year."
