Specialists: There are those who seek to keep Iraq without electricity and its dependence on imported gas
Baghdad / Hussein Hatem
Economic experts accused parties of trying to keep Iraq without electricity and relying on imported gas, which aggravated the electricity crisis in the country. Most areas of the capital, Baghdad, and other governorates have witnessed a near-constant power outage in recent days, as processing hours have reached their lowest level.
The Ministry of Electricity indicated that the capital, Baghdad, is the least equipped with electric power.
Ministry spokesman Ahmed Al-Abadi says, "The energy situation is bad, and the determination of the loads of the production plants is still negatively affecting the hours of energy supply."
He added that "the deficient gas and few financial allocations that are not enough to keep pace with demand, have negatively affected the electricity sector."
Al-Abadi went on to say, "We do not owe the Iranian side anything other than the dues for the month of December of last year," adding, "We addressed the Ministry of Finance about the payment of Iranian gas dues."
And the spokesman for the Ministry of Electricity added, “The decline in Iranian gas emissions supplied to production stations, and the entry of generating units under emergency and periodic maintenance to prepare for the coming summer, has had a significant impact on the renewal of the system’s loads and has led to the loss of nearly 8,000 megawatts between gas declines and periodic and emergency maintenance.”
And he added, that his ministry is "constantly negotiating with the Iranian side, and coordinating at a high level with the Ministry of Oil to compensate for the alternative fuel plan."
In turn, economic affairs specialist Ali Al-Fariji says that "the problem of electricity has become almost continuous," blaming "its management of the responsibility for failure."
Al-Fraiji added, "The electric power hardly meets the needs of citizens, so what is the case with large factories and laboratories."
The specialist in economic affairs pointed out, "The issue of the decline in Iranian gas emissions is an excuse that the ministry uses to cover up its mismanagement and negligence."
Al-Fraiji said, "It is possible to move to other solutions and not rely on Iranian gas, including the gas industry inside Iraq and the investment of associated gas that burns in large quantities."
The specialist in economic affairs pointed out that "all successive governments bear the shortcomings in the electricity file, led by the concerned ministries of electricity and oil and investment authorities."
He stressed that "the financial releases that were spent on electricity from 2005 until today are very high and can solve the crisis a long time ago," noting that "failure, waste and the controlling gangs prevented the advancement of the electricity file."
Al-Fraiji excludes, "Iraq's dependence on renewable energy because there is no infrastructure capable of absorbing this type of modern technology that we hear about in southern Iraq."
For his part, the oil expert, Hamza Al-Jawahiri, believes that "there are parties that seek to keep Iraq without electricity and its dependence on gas from abroad."
Al-Jawahiri added that "the reason for not investing associated gas in operating electric power plants is due to Iraqi parties seeking to keep the country as a gas importer, as it stands in the way of investing associated gas that is burned daily and incurs financial losses to the state in millions of dollars for their personal interests and the interests of the countries that support them."
He pointed out that "the sums spent on electricity in Iraq went to the corrupt and were not invested properly."
Iraq relies on Iranian gas to operate electric power plants, as it obtains periodic exceptions from Washington to import Iranian gas, given the economic sanctions imposed on Iran.
