On Thursday, January 20, 2022, Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein met on the sidelines of his visit to Brussels, the European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration, Mrs. Yelva Johansson. During the meeting, they discussed bilateral relations between the Republic of Iraq and the European Union and ways to strengthen them, especially the issue of returning Iraqis stranded on European Union borders voluntarily.
The Minister reviewed the efforts of the Iraqi government in dealing with the issue of immigration, and the measures it has taken to return Iraqis stranded at the borders of a number of European Union countries such as Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, where Iraq was able to return about 4,000 Iraqi citizens through 10 special flights organized by airlines. Iraq, stressing the importance of continuing the existing migration dialogue with the European side, and supporting programs to encourage the voluntary return of Iraqi refugees in European countries through the preparation of special programs to rehabilitate this segment.
The Minister also presented a summary of the steps taken by the Iraqi government to combat smuggling networks and the solidarity of national authorities to raise societal awareness and clarify the disadvantages and consequences of migration.
For her part, Johansson stressed the depth and strength of the relations between the two sides, praising Iraq's role in eliminating the terrorist organization ISIS, and indicating the importance that the European Union attaches to the issue of cooperation and partnership with Iraq, and its desire for its stability and keenness to deepen the bonds of relations between the two sides, praising Iraq's efforts to cooperate. With the European Union and member states to return its citizens stranded at the borders, Johansson indicated the importance of cooperation to reduce migration and limit its dire consequences for migrants and their families, which is reflected positively in alleviating the migrant crisis. voluntarily immigrant and consider it a model in the field of cooperation with the European Union in the field of migration.
