The Iraqi Foreign Minister, Fouad Hussein, assured his Saudi counterpart, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, that the Iraqi government "will work with all its efforts" to contribute to reaching understandings between Saudi Arabia and Iran

The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, in a statement, that Hussein held a phone call with bin Farhan on Sunday, where they discussed "the reasons for the delay in holding the fifth round of the Saudi-Iranian talks," adding that the call took place, during which "views were exchanged in this regard."
Hussein stressed, according to the statement, that "the Iraqi government will make every effort and invest all its relations in order to create an appropriate opportunity for understandings between Tehran and Riyadh."
The two ministers touched on "the tense situation in the Gulf and the need to find ways to remove danger from the region and create a state of stability and security," while Hussein stressed, in this context, "the Iraqi government's readiness to play a pivotal role in this field."
The two sides also discussed bilateral relations, cooperation and joint coordination in the field of supporting the two sides' candidates in international organizations.
At the conclusion of the talks, the two ministers stressed, according to the statement, "the necessity of continuing communication during this sensitive period in the history of the region."
Saudi Arabia and Iran are the two largest rival powers in the region, and there is great tension between the two parties in light of multiple sharp differences, especially the war in Yemen and the January 2, 2016 attacks on the Riyadh embassy in Tehran and the Saudi consulate in Mashhad after the kingdom’s authorities executed 47 people in terrorism cases, including A prominent Shiite cleric, Nimr Baqir al-Nimr.
There have been no official diplomatic relations between Tehran and Riyadh since 2016, but in recent months, messages have been exchanged about their desire to settle differences.
Last year, Saudi Arabia and Iran held 4 rounds of talks in Baghdad on the normalization of severed relations and ways to resolve differences, amid expectations that the Iraqi capital would host the fifth round of this dialogue soon.
