Russia's parliament granted President Vladimir Putin, on Tuesday, permission to use force outside the country, while the deputy defense minister said that "we have no choice but to have to use forces abroad."
The announcement came a day after Russia recognized two breakaway regions in Ukraine, which sparked Western criticism and exacerbated fears of a Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The Russian Federation Council approved Putin's request to send troops to support the separatists. After a quick discussion, the Council unanimously approved the request by a vote of the 153 members.
For his part, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said at a press conference that "Russia continues to build up its forces and we will impose severe sanctions on it if it decides to invade Ukraine. We will increase our presence in Eastern Europe if necessary."
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on Tuesday that Western countries should increase arms shipments to his country to help it confront Russia.
