Iraq welcomes the armistice and the cessation of operations inside Yemen and on the border with Saudi Arabia
Shafaq News/ On Saturday, the Iraqi government welcomed the announcement of the armistice and the cessation of military operations for a period of two months inside Yemen and on the borders between that country and Saudi Arabia.
The Iraqi Foreign Ministry said in a statement today, "As we value the efforts and endeavors of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, and its adoption of an initiative for Yemeni-Yemeni dialogue aimed at a ceasefire in Yemen, we express our support for the efforts made by the United Nations, through its special envoy, to resolve the crisis, and the concerned countries And devotion to the dialogue approach, given the opportunity it holds for achieving peace and establishing a new logic that will reflect on the security and stability of the region.
The statement added that "the political solution is the only solution to end the war, and all efforts are combined to get Yemen out of its crisis, end the suffering of its people and start building the future of its generations, by designing a framework that prepares for a negotiating process that guarantees a comprehensive and sustainable peace."
On Friday, the United Nations announced that forces loyal to the Yemeni government, backed by a Saudi-led military coalition, and the Houthis had agreed to a two-month truce in Yemen, starting on Saturday, with the possibility of renewing it.
The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, said in a statement; "The parties to the conflict responded positively to a proposal by the United Nations to declare a two-month truce that will enter into force (Saturday) the second of April at seven in the evening, Yemen time," adding that "the truce is renewable after a period of two months with the consent of the parties."
And last Wednesday, consultations for the Yemeni forces began in Riyadh under the auspices of the Gulf Cooperation Council in the absence of the Houthi rebels who refuse to hold a dialogue in Saudi Arabia.
The rebels announced last Saturday, a unilateral truce, for a period of three days.
