    Yes Iraq: Baghdad

The Ministry of Water Resources expects that Iraq will face water problems next summer, and the priority will be to secure water for drinking and watering orchards. As for land cultivation and the summer plan, the focus will be towards growing crops that do not consume a lot of water.
Director General of the National Center for Water Resources Management Hatem Hamid said that “the problem of water scarcity continues for the third year in a row as a result of the lack of water revenues,” noting that the ministry’s management of the storage system in the Tigris and Euphrates basins enabled it to give priority to drinking water, orchards, environmental expenses, and a winter and summer farming plan. for the past years .”
He explained that "next summer is expected to witness difficulty, but efforts are continuing to secure drinking water and orchards, as well as preparing a summer plan in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture through the water storage available in the dams ."
He added that “the bid’ah water project is insured, given that it has priority in securing drinking water in the governorates of Basra and Nasiriyah,” pointing to “securing the share of Hamrin Dam, especially since the water shortage is severe in the revenues of the Diyala River on the one hand and the water cut off from Iran on the other hand, which has caused a shortage of water.” The water storage of the dam, but the storage levels are the same as for the previous year, and the Hamrin and Darbandikhan dams will be managed based on the available storage and in a manner that ensures the continuity of securing drinking water and irrigating orchards for the governorates of Sulaymaniyah and Diyala .”
On the other hand, Hamid explained that “the agricultural plan for the next summer season will focus on crops that consume small amounts of water,” stressing that “the Ministry of Agriculture has proposals and we will work to meet them within the strategic reserves available in dams and reservoirs.”
On this basis, it is expected that Iraq will not plant rye and rice this season, while the area of the summer plan will not exceed 3 million acres.
According to previous statements by the ministry, it is not possible to reduce the area more, because it will lead to the abandonment of some crops such as maize and rice, which amounts to nearly 500,000 dunams, as well as vegetables and summer crops such as cotton, mung, and sesame in a few areas.
It is expected that about 450,000 tons of rice will be produced if 500,000 dunams are cultivated, while Iraq consumes one million tons of rice annually, which means that if the plan is not reduced, the local product will fill only 45% of Iraq’s need, and it needs to import more than 500,000 tons, but if the plan is further reduced and rice cultivation is restricted because of what it consumes of large quantities of water, production will decline further.
