Baghdad / Osama Al-Bayati
Yesterday, Monday, the Ministry of Commerce reported that it had taken measures that contributed to controlling prices in the markets, but experts confirmed that the price hike is still continuing, stressing that the state does not have the right to interfere in business directly except by creating a kind of competition by increasing the supply of basic food and consumer items.
Informed sources in the Ministry of Commerce told Al-Mada that "mobile teams affiliated with the ministry, along with the security forces, conducted campaigns to observe prices in the markets."
The sources added, "These teams were able to control prices and end the crisis that occurred during the past days."
She pointed out that "the ministry has taken many measures, most notably the conclusion of contracts in order to obtain the items of the ration card and the distribution of more than one share in order to tighten control over the local markets."
In addition, economic expert Saleh Al-Hamashi said, in an interview with (Al-Mada), that “the rise in food prices is due, some of which are due to external reasons, including the crisis in Ukraine, and the other is internal, represented by changing the exchange rate of the dollar and imposing new taxes and fees on imported materials.”
Al-Hamashi added, "The statements of the Ministry of Commerce regarding the control of prices are surprising, because the price hike is still continuing, although it is at the same levels as it was a few days ago."
He pointed out, "The crisis was initially gradual, and the rise happened in an upward manner due to the existing stock and the contracts that were concluded in the past to purchase goods, until today it reached a final price that it has settled on, but it is, of course, more than it was before the crisis."
And Al-Hamashi, that "the Iraqi government obligated the customs authority to enter only five agricultural crops and exempted them from fees, and the decision came temporarily for ninety days, but we expect the crisis to return again after the decision expires." He believed, "The government cannot directly intervene in setting prices because the state's policy after 2003 turned into a (market economy)".
Al-Hamashi went on to say, “there are no standards in determining prices in the market, as they are subject to supply and demand, and the burdens remain the same on the Iraqi citizen.”
For his part, the economic expert, Daoud Abdel Zayer, said, in an interview with Al-Mada, that "the current prices in the markets are high by 30%, and the matter is not only related to Iraq, but to the price of what is exported from the country itself."
Zayer added, "Reducing the rise needs a mechanism to be followed, which is to diversify import sources and not be limited to a specific country."
And he demanded, "The Ministry of Commerce contracting large quantities of foodstuffs, and pumping them into the markets at reasonable prices."
Zayer said, "This measure would create a competitive environment that limits the monopoly of some traders on foodstuffs in order to raise their prices."
Zayer advised, "The government should set up an annual program that deals with economic crises in order not to repeat the apparent price hikes."
The Council of Ministers had opened the door for importing some agricultural crops for a period of ninety days in order to control the high prices of the markets, while revealing that it had taken legal measures against dozens of price-manipulating traders.
