Yes Iraq: Baghdad

It seems that about 70% of the wheat that will be provided as a strategic stockpile for Iraq will come through imports, with increasing indications that marketing the locally produced wheat will not reach more than two million tons only.
The assistant general manager of the General Company for Grain Trade, Haider Nouri, said in statements followed by "Yes Iraq", that "the large quantities that are achieved during each marketing season for wheat usually meet the country's needs for a whole year," adding: "We used to reach the stage of self-sufficiency, especially during the years. But the plan approved by the Ministry of Agriculture stipulates that farmers cultivate 50% of their agricultural areas due to the lack of water resources reaching the country, in addition to the lack of rain, which caused a decrease in the volume of agricultural production, especially the wheat crop.”
Nuri suggested that "the total local crop will reach two million tons of wheat, sufficient for a period of 4 months, which means the need for financial support that enhances the ministry's endeavor to import what it needs of wheat, and to meet the country's needs for the subsequent months as well."
And Jabr indicated, "At the lowest estimates, the ministry needs nearly three million tons of imported wheat to secure the appropriate storage that will meet the consumption of the coming months, that is, until the next harvest season."
While Iraq needs about 5 million tons of wheat annually, Iraq is facing a need to import 3 million tons, meaning that the wheat stockpile will be about 70% of it coming through import.
The global price of a ton with the cost of transportation is about 500 dollars per ton, which will cost Iraq more than 1.5 billion dollars.

This expected production figure of 2 million tons is the lowest expected figure so far, after estimates had indicated a production of 2.5 to 3 million tons.
The Ministry of Commerce had announced the allocation of 500 billion dinars to the dues of farmers and farmers for the current marketing season, and with reference to the ton price set by the government for wheat purchased from farmers, amounting to 750 thousand dinars per ton, the amount of 500 billion specified, is sufficient only to purchase about 670 thousand tons only, which represents Only 22% of the expected production that the state should buy.

The information indicates that there are attempts by specific parties to buy farmers’ wheat at high prices and higher than the state’s price and smuggle it abroad, which raises questions about the feasibility of buying Iraqi wheat at higher prices and more than the international price.
