The Ministry of Commerce confirmed its commitment to support the ration card items, pointing to its quest to provide food security for a whole year, denying the existence of fears of famine in the country, calling on the House of Representatives to urgently pass the proposed law on emergency support for food security.
"The Ministry of Commerce is committed to the food basket program that was signed last year, and is continuing with large-scale processing operations," the ministry's spokesman, Muhammad Hanoun, said in a television interview followed by (Al-Mada).
Hanoun added, "A message that we would like to reassure the Iraqis that there is no famine, and we are committed to preparing large quantities of wheat through marketers of the national product."
He pointed out, "What has reached our warehouses is 777 thousand tons so far, and work is continuing to secure more to meet popular needs."
Hanoun stressed "the importance of providing strategic storage to ensure food security safety during the next year," noting that "the world is going through a major crisis and all countries of the world have closed their borders, including Russia, India and major exporting countries."
He finds, "The failure to pass the Food Security Law has put the country at a crossroads, and the state must take urgent measures in order to provide strategic storage, especially foodstuffs, for those covered by the ration card."
He stated, "The food crisis suffered by many countries in the region, and there are popular protests in some of them."
Hanoun spoke about "a number of reform decisions taken by the government to achieve food security, such as supporting the agricultural sector and paying farmers' dues," stressing that "the price of a ton of wheat reached 850 thousand dinars, which is a good decision to support farmers."
And he added, "All these decisions are still waiting for the House of Representatives to proceed with the proposal of the emergency support law for food security and development," stressing that "the ministry contracted with an Australian origin for wheat, in addition to another contract to buy 100 tons of German wheat, from the public company's funds." for the grain industry.
Hanoun said, "The quantities of wheat that we obtained, whether supplied or from the national product, are good, but they are not sufficient to fill the strategic reserves, as some countries in the region have done."
Hanoun continues, "One of the senior officials in the World Food Program told me that Iraq is the cheapest in food prices, and famine cannot occur in it because of decisions to support the ration card, which was the main solution to food security problems."
He continued, "The prices in the markets are controlled through an operations room formed with the National Security Agency, and we have joint teams roaming all markets to follow up on prices."
Hanoun denied resorting to “decisions that annoy traders as much as we talked about the need for awareness and national efforts to confront the crisis, and we found great cooperation in this field.”
The House of Representatives is seeking to legislate a law on emergency support for food security, and has completed the first reading of the proposal submitted by the Finance Committee. .
