The United Nations Security Council decided to extend the mandate of the UNAMI mission in Iraq, while calling for the formation of a new government to achieve the national priorities of the Iraqi people.

In a statement, the council said, "It was decided to extend the work of the UNAMI mission in Iraq, and we reaffirm Iraq's independence, sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, and the importance of its stability and prosperity, especially in light of Iraq's victory on its lands over ISIS terrorist gangs," calling on the international community to "increase its support." Iraq faces challenges to achieve stability, including the ongoing fight against terrorism, ISIS, al-Qaeda and their affiliate groups.

He added, "Recognizing the danger of explosive munitions and their impact on civilians, including children, the Council welcomes the efforts made to clear the areas."

The Council recalled “the fundamental principle of the inviolability of diplomatic and consular premises, and the obligations of host governments, including under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, to take all appropriate steps to protect diplomatic and consular premises from any intrusion or damage, And to prevent any breach of the security of these missions or prejudice to their dignity.”

The Council commended “the Government of Iraq and the Independent High Electoral Commission for carrying out technically well-managed and generally peaceful elections on October 10, 2021,” calling for “the formation of a new government quickly and peacefully, to achieve the national priorities of the Iraqi people, including through economic reform.” Regional cooperation, stabilization and development, and the promotion and protection of human rights.
The Council continued, "The Iraqi government has urgently introduced meaningful reforms aimed at meeting the legitimate demands of the Iraqi people to address corruption, provide basic services, diversify its economy, create jobs, improve governance, and strengthen viable and responsive state institutions."
