Sheikh Fadel Shaalan Abu al-Jun, one of the elders of the Muthanna clans, filed a lawsuit against the Ministers of Water Resources and Agriculture for preventing the governorate from farming and not committing to the delivery of its water quota.
Abu Al-Joon told Al-Mada that "Al-Muthanna began to lose its agricultural identity because of the unfair treatment it was treated by resources, water and agriculture, represented by reducing its agricultural share below the standard."
He added, "This deal is a tax for the Muthanna clans' refusal to invest in the desert of the governorate, and this was a reaction to ending agriculture in the governorate and putting pressure on them to move towards investment."
And he indicated, "The clans of Al-Muthanna will stand in the face of anyone who tries to kill the governorate's agricultural future and rob the farmers' rights," noting that "these clans have a firm stance on the matter."
The Agricultural Committee in Al-Muthanna Governorate had rejected the central government’s decision not to include the governorate in the summer agricultural plan, while warning of the repercussions of not cultivating strawberries on the agricultural and social reality in the governorate.
The head of the committee, Deputy Governor Sami Al-Hassani, said in a statement, which Al-Mada received a copy of, that "inclusion of governorates without others in cultivar cultivation, especially the governorates of Najaf and Diwaniyah, will lead to a high rate of abuses on Al-Muthanna's share."
He added, "The local government will address the Ministries of Agriculture and Water Resources to reconsider that plan and to include the province with the cultivation of watercress and other summer crops."
