Baghdad informs Tehran of Riyadh's readiness to start "public political talks"
Shafaq News/ Iranian Foreign Minister Amir Abdollahian announced on Friday that the Iraqi government informed Iran of Saudi Arabia's readiness to resume talks between Tehran and Riyadh to restore relations between the two countries.
"With regard to Saudi Arabia, we conducted five rounds of negotiations, mainly on the security level, and progress has been made in these negotiations," Amir Abdollahian said, in an interview with state television on Thursday night.
He added, "Last week, we received a message from the Iraqi Foreign Minister (Fouad Hussein) that the Saudi side is ready to transfer the talks to the political and public level, and we expressed our readiness for the talks to enter the political stage."
He expressed his hope that this would lead to "the return of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Iran to normal."
Saudi Arabia and Iran held five rounds of talks in Baghdad, under the direct sponsorship of Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi, where they took place at the level of security officials and diplomats, the first of which was in April 2021.
It is noteworthy that Riyadh severed relations with Tehran in 2016 after Iranian protesters stormed the Saudi embassy in the Iranian capital to protest the execution of a Shiite cleric in Saudi Arabia.
