Ericsson employs about 100,000 people and sells telecom equipment in 180 countries
Hundreds of Americans have filed a lawsuit against the Swedish telecoms company Ericsson, accusing it of financing terrorist operations after it paid bribes to al-Qaeda and ISIS to allow it to operate in Iraq.
The [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] said the lawsuit was filed in a Washington court by more than 500 American service members and civilians who were victims of terrorist attacks and hostage takings between 2005 and 2021, as well as families of victims killed during the attacks.
The newspaper added that the lawsuit was filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act of 1990, which allows victims of terrorism to seek damages in US courts, including against companies and individuals who aid and abet terrorism.
Victims of terrorism accused Ericsson of paying terrorist groups that control large swathes of Iraq, in an attempt to prevent them from hindering their business. Ultimately, they said, the funding aided a campaign of kidnapping, torture, bombing and murder.
Victims alleged that money Erickson believed to have sent to terrorists in Iraq eventually helped fund attacks in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria.
In return, Ericsson said she would "stand up and vigorously defend the lawsuit".
The lawsuit follows Ericsson's admission in February that it had discovered "serious violations of compliance rules" in Iraq, including evidence of corruption-related misconduct.
The case came to light in February before the publication of an extensive investigative report coordinated by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. This forced Ericsson to announce the results of an internal investigation dating back to 2019, to determine the facts of possible corruption in the group's activities in Iraq during the previous eight years.
The internal investigation, in particular, talks about suspicious payments for land transportation in areas controlled by the Islamic State, which are believed to have ended up in the organization's pockets.
At the end of April, Swedish courts also announced the opening of an investigation into possible acts of corruption, in particular the payment of possible bribes to members of the Islamic State in Iraq.
According to leaked documents, the value of suspicious payments in Iraq to the company amounted to about $ 37 million, in addition to giving officials gifts and vacations.
Headquartered in Stockholm, Ericsson employs 100,000 people and sells telecom equipment in 180 countries. It also plays a leading role in the development of the next generation of 5G mobile technology in the UK.
