Kurdistan Democratic Socialist: 'Confederation' is the solution to Iraq's problems

The Secretary of the Kurdistan Socialist Democratic Party, Muhammad Haji Mahmoud, said on Monday that changing the political system will not end Iraq's problems, stressing at the same time that the only solution lies in the "confederation."
Changing the regime and holding early elections are among the main demands of the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, whose supporters have been camping in the vicinity of the Iraqi parliament for about ten days.
Haji Mahmoud said in a televised interview that holding early elections and changing the regime will not solve any of Iraq's problems, indicating that the only solution to the current situation lies in the application of the "confederation" system.
Haji Mahmoud added that the current system in Iraq, whether it is parliament or any other system, will not address the Iraqi crisis by presenting or delaying the elections.
He continued, "In Iraq, (the parties) were unable to work together and reach an agreement, and we must now search for another way and system, which is the confederal system."
Earlier today, the head of the State of Law coalition, Nuri al-Maliki, ruled out dissolving parliament, changing the regime, or holding early elections until after the return of the elected parliament.
Al-Maliki said in a television interview on the occasion of Ashura's anniversary, "The Tuff Revolution has proven that the strength of tyranny, perversion and infidelity, no matter how branched off, the nation will gather its scattering even after a while."
He added that "Iraq is a country of components and its people are made up of components, and only the will of the entire people can be imposed on it and through its constitutional institutions represented by the elected parliament."
He continued, "There is no solution for Parliament, no regime change, and no early elections except for the parliament's return to meeting, and it is the one who discusses these demands, and what it decides, we proceed with, because Iraq and its system are a trust in our necks."
Al-Maliki is one of the most prominent opponents of the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, and they have always exchanged accusations with each other regarding the struggle to form a government.
