Today, Wednesday, the Presidency of the Kurdistan Region announced the details of its meeting with the Kurdish political forces regarding the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Parliamentary elections are supposed to be held on October 1.
In addition to the political parties, the meeting was attended by the President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, and the UN envoy to Iraq, Jenin Blackshart.
The Presidency of the Region stated in a statement that Nechirvan Barzani expressed his hope that the political parties would reach an understanding about setting the date for holding the elections and resolving the problems, stressing the importance of the elections for the Kurdistan Region, and said, "The delay in the elections harms the reputation and prestige of the Kurdistan Region."
In addition, Plasschaert stressed the importance of the parties reaching an understanding on the issue of the elections and setting the date for holding them, and expressed the full support of the United Nations for the success of the process, as well as the need to reach a conclusion as soon as possible, because there is not much time available.
The statement indicated that the Vice President of the Kurdistan Region, Mustafa Sayed Qadir, submitted a report to the Kurdistan Region Presidency Committee, which is charged with following up the issue of the elections.
The political parties put forward their views and views in this context, while thanking the Presidency of the Kurdistan Region for its efforts to bring the political parties together, and considered the continuation of meetings and talks "a positive thing", according to the statement.
The Presidency of the Kurdistan Region said that it was decided to hold the last meeting to resolve all issues related to the elections and solve the problems facing the process, at the beginning of next September.
She added that she will continue her talks and preparations with the political parties, with the support of a specialized team from UNAMI, until that date comes.
The election law of the Kurdistan Region was approved in 2013 and stipulates that the region is one district, but some forces want to amend the law and transform the region into four districts.
The fifth session of the Kurdistan Parliament ends next September, while the forces began exchanging views among themselves on the election law and the method for calculating the electoral districts.
Only two months remain for the elections to choose a new parliament in the Kurdistan Region. However, the controversy over the election law in the region, which consists of four provinces, has returned to the fore again amid calls from political forces to amend it and other demands to keep it.
