The leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, set next Saturday as a date for a demonstration, which he had previously described as "one million."
The Sadrist movement urged all Iraqis to crawl from all provinces towards Baghdad in support of their supporters' sit-in outside Parliament in the Green Zone.
The Sadrists are still holding a sit-in in Al-Khadra to demand the dissolution of Parliament and the holding of early elections, which is rejected by their opponents in the coordinating framework who have camped out at a bridge leading to the fortified area.
Al-Sadr said in a comment quoted by his representative, Saleh Muhammad al-Iraqi, "It was decided to set a date for the demonstration next Saturday, with the gathering in Tahrir Square first at five in the afternoon and then marching towards the Celebrations Square."
He added that the decision to launch the demonstration on Saturday came after a “prolonged discussion session,” stressing that the upcoming demonstration would be “peaceful and unprecedented in terms of numbers.”
Supporters of the coordination framework, which consists of political forces close to Tehran, insist on the need to form the new government and to resume parliament sessions.
This is the latest in a series of protests that have raised fears of unrest and clashes if the political stalemate that has been going on for nearly ten months continues.
Al-Sadr dissolved first in the recent elections, but did not succeed in forming a government devoid of Iranian-backed forces, and then withdrew his deputies from parliament.
The coordinating framework says that it is continuing to form the new government, even if it calls for parliament sessions to be held outside the Green Zone in Baghdad.
