The report added, "This is done in coordination with the various religious endowments offices in Iraq, especially the Sunni, Shiite, Christian, Sabian and Yazidi endowments, and with the participation of the Vatican Pontifical Council as well."
He pointed out, "Pope Francis had called from Baghdad during his recent visit to Iraq for the stability and security of the region and the strengthening of interfaith dialogue."
And the report indicated, "Iraq's interest in interfaith dialogue is not something new," stressing that "the local government of Dhi Qar Governorate began on July 10, the implementation of the Interfaith Dialogue Center project."
He explained, "The center includes places of worship for the Islamic, Christian, Jewish and Sabian religions, as well as a hall and a forum for interfaith dialogue in the ancient city of Ur in the province."
The report pointed out that “the topic of interfaith dialogue gained paramount importance after the war on the terrorist organization ISIS for the period between 2014 and 2017, and its defeat, and the displacement of more than 6 million people from their original areas of residence.”
He noted that "the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Safiya Al-Suhail, had met last week with the Vatican State's ambassador to Iraq, Archbishop Mita Liskovar, and the two parties discussed the preparations that Iraq is making to host the third conference for interfaith dialogue."
Al-Suhail said, "The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, under the patronage of Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi and under the supervision of Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein, will host the International Interfaith Dialogue Forum in the capital, Baghdad, in coordination with the Vatican and a number of countries and international institutions."
Al-Suhail added, "The aim of the forum is to promote peace, international cooperation and coexistence, which were among the outcomes of the Baghdad Conference last year."
Al-Suhail pointed out that “the first session was between the offices of endowments in Iraq and the Papal Council of the Vatican State, which was held in 2013 and the second session in 2017, during which the challenges facing the people of the country of different religions were discussed, and that the third session is expected to be held in the month of October.” 2022.”
Al-Suhail added, "The conference will adopt the phrase, appropriate education for new generations, a path to peace and comprehensive development, as its slogan."
Al-Suhail revealed, "some of the contents of the conference's work paper, which aims to prepare teachers to perform their educational mission in maintaining peace while reconsidering school curricula in order to promote a culture of coexistence."
With regard to the main parties involved in organizing the conference, Al-Suhail said, “Among them are the Pontifical Council for Interfaith Dialogue, which is one of the official institutions of the Vatican in this field, as well as the offices of the Iraqi religious endowments, in addition to leading spiritual figures of different religions.”
Al-Suhail continues, "The Iraqi state seeks to respect its obligations regarding respect for human rights and democracy, as stipulated in the Iraqi constitution, which includes the rights of cultural and religious freedoms for minorities and other basic freedoms," stressing that "Iraq pledged to abide by the recommendations and what came about the Pope's visit to the Vatican." for Iraq.”
For his part, the representative of the Shiite Endowment for Religious and Cultural Affairs, Ihsan Jaafar Ahmed, stated that "the Shiite Endowment attended two previous conferences for interfaith dialogue in the Vatican, and the new expected conference will be the third."
Ahmed added, "These conferences are always preceded by preparatory meetings in which specific axes are agreed upon. During the conference, the opinions and reports of the participants are presented, and then a final statement is drafted that reflects a common view that leads to rapprochement and deeper communication."
Ahmed explained, "The Shiite Endowment is participating in the preparation stage for the third conference, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is responsible for achieving communication between the participants and facilitating the protocol aspects."
Ahmed indicated that "there are committees working to determine the topics that will be discussed during the conference," expecting that "the results of these meetings will be positive at the national, regional and international levels, due to the major challenges faced by societies, especially those working in the religious field."
Ahmed went on to believe that “the Sunni and Shiite endowments work together to build on many commonalities between them and restore national harmony that extremist ideology sought to destroy in Iraq, which contains different religious and ethnic sects and races, and we are working to make this diversity a source of strength for Iraq.”
The year 2013 witnessed the establishment of the Iraqi Council for Interfaith Dialogue, which pledged itself to formulate practical mechanisms to activate religious understanding by organizing dialogue sessions and ensuring effective participation in international conferences to highlight the danger of existence facing minorities.
